Bypass Relays

Bypass relays are used to isolate a vehicle's electrical systems from a trailer's electrical system, therefore protecting the vehicle should the trailer's electrics malfunction. Over time with the advent of the advanced electronic systems used by many modern vehicles, bypass relays have also become more advanced; this was required:

  1. to allow the vehicle's lamp control and monitoring electronics to operate correctly in the presence of a trailer.
  2. to be able to correctly decode the vehicle's complex multiplexed and modulated lamp control circuits and operate the trailers own bulbs appropriately.

At Tow Technology we can provide a bypass relay solution for any current car make and model, and offer options covering many other vehicle-trailer combinations. But remember, when using any Universal Bypass Relay (and not just one from ourselves), a vehicle that depends on sensing the presence of a trailer to activate towing-related safety features, will fail to detect a trailer connected via the bypass relay.

SMART Logic Module: Logic-controlled Seven Lamp Bypass

TF2218/7-P SMART Logic Module

The TF2218/7 bypass relay is a modern micro-controlled solution providing fully buffered relays, bypassing all of a car’s bulb-failure warning systems. The main features of the TF2218/7 include:

  • Fully bypassed, all light circuits including the reverse are bypassed with a high impedance interface. Consequently it is totally transparent to the car and its bulb failure warning system.
  • Compatibility, works with all makes and models of cars with standard or modulated (e.g. were the brake and tail are on one wire) light circuitry. There is no chatter, the trailer lights are either a steady on or off .
  • Audible flasher monitor, integrated audible trailer flasher monitor, with an additional Tell-Tale terminal for a remote buzzer or LED indicator.
  • High reliability, fully protected against all transients and current or voltage reversals. The use of high quality 20A relays ensure system reliability and a long service life.
  • Resilient, built to withstand rough treatment including supply reversals. Fully snubbed against voltage spikes and other electrical hazards.
  • Low cost, a cost effective design that is simple and quick fitting.
  • Low power, less than 1mA quiescent current.
  • EMC compliant.

The TF2218/7 is available in four options:

  • TF2218/7-P fitted with 350mm plain wires.
  • TF2218/7-S fitted with 350mm plain wires terminated with a Multi-Splice connector.
  • TF2218/7-M fitted with 350mm plain wires and has no buzzer sound (mute option).
  • TF2218/7-2.5 fitted with long 2.5m plain wires.

Failure Alert Module: Microprocessor-controlled Seven Lamp Bypass with Alert Technology

TF2219FA Failure Alert Module

The TF2218 bypass relay is an intelligent micro-controlled solution. With fully buffered relays, Auto Self-Check, and designed to adapt itself to all modern cars, this advanced unit can configure itself to all types of standard or modulated lighting circuitry.

The unique feature of the TF2219FA is the Trailer Lamp Failure Alert facility. In the case of a trailer light circuit failure (in either the bulb or relay), a short alarm sound will inform the driver each time that circuit is activated. The main features of the TF2219FA include:

  • Auto self-check, on power-up the unit carries out a self-check routine that activates and validates each relay.
  • Failure alert, informs driver of trailer light circuit failure.
